Spider Veins

When we talk about skin problems and disorders then there are so many of them that sometimes despite having them we are not aware. Spider veins is such a skin condition which is although common but for some reason least talked about. They are swollen or enlarged blood vessels that appear at the surface of the skin and scientifically called Telangiectasia.
Before going or thinking about the treatment of any skin problem it is always good to have some inkling about the underlying cause. As far as spider veins are concerned, they develop when veins with smaller valves do not work properly. This allows the blood to pool inside a segment of the vein thus stretching the vein wall.
There are a few types of spider veins but the most common ones are found in the legs and on the face. Those in legs can appear any time between the ages of 18 and 35, peaking between ages 50 and 60. They can be caused by standing or sitting for long periods or from having excessive weight either due to obesity or pregnancy. The SV on the face are mainly found on cheeks, ears, neck, nose and chin.
Considering that spider veins are not harmful so they generally do not require any treatments but if looked upon from the view of a cosmetic problem then treatment may be important. The only cosmetic treatment for this condition is Sclerotherapy the features of which are as follows:
- It is a modestly invasive procedure in which a sclerosing agent like saline is injected into the veins, making them scar.
- The scarring makes the staining less prominent and often causes the vein to collapse and then absorbed back into the body.
- Normally the treatment may have a stinging sensation, but does not last more than a few days weeks at the most.
Another procedure, especially used for spider veins on the face, involves laser which heats up the veins, causing them to clot and collapse. There can be some stinging sensation with mild redness but that goes away after some time. However, the treatment is not recommended for people with darker pigmented skin.
